Christmas Parade of Lights
Always the first Saturday evening in December, there is a definite nip in the air. A large crowd lines
both sides of Main Street and the children anxiously await the activity to begin. Then a siren sings out from a
decorated fire truck and the Christmas Parade of Lights has begun. Everyone claps in anticipation. There are
home crafted floats, decorated trash trucks and more fire trucks, horse units and canine troops, ATV’s and automobiles,
and various marching units. And all are brightly arrayed in decorations and lights. Candy is liberally thrown to
the children and Christmas music fills the air. And then what children of all ages have been waiting for – the arrival
of St. Nick. Santa’s mode of transportation is always a surprise. Some years he chooses a convertible, sometimes a
four-wheeler, and most recently a motorcycle side-car. And he always takes time out from his busy schedule to sit on
the porch of the Chamber of Commerce office, listen to what the little ones want for Christmas, and pose for pictures.
Then the Christmas season is officially underway in the Surface Creek Valley.
